Square Head Bolts

Square head bolts, also called machine bolts are threaded to receive a nut. These decorative bolts come in smooth, hammered and pyramid head styles. To shop by head style click on the image below to see all available sizes in that head appearance.

Our square head bolts are available in diameters from #10 - 3/4" and lengths from 3/4" - 12" depending on your chosen diameter.

All bolts are partial threaded unless custom ordered as full thread. To ask a question or request customizations such as full thread please reach out to us via office@oldwestiron.com.

FAQ

Q: What are square head bolts used for?
A: Square head bolts are commonly used in restoration work, timber framing, iron hardware installations, and historical architectural projects. Their distinct old-world appearance makes them perfect for vintage reproductions, rustic construction, and exposed hardware where aesthetics matter.

Q: Are square head bolts stronger than hex bolts?
A: Strength-wise, square and hex bolts are comparable when made from the same material and grade. However, square heads offer more contact surface for gripping with tools, making them ideal in heavy-duty or rough-use applications—especially in field installations where slipping tools can be a concern.

Q: Can square head bolts be used outdoors?
A: Absolutely. When paired with the right finish—such as hot-dip galvanized, black oxide, or our hand-applied rust-sealed patinas—square head bolts are suitable for exterior use. Regular maintenance like occasional oiling or re-sealing may be needed for raw or untreated finishes.

Q: Are these bolts hand-forged or machined?
A: Our square head bolts are produced to match historical styles and finishes. Most are machine-formed for precision and strength, but select styles are available with hand-hammered heads for a more authentic, blacksmith-made look.

Q: Do I need square nuts to go with these bolts?
A: Not always, but we highly recommend them for historical accuracy and visual cohesion—especially in exposed applications. We offer matching square nuts in several finishes to complete the look.

Q: How do I choose the right length and thread type?
A: Start by measuring the total thickness of the material you're bolting through, then add enough for the nut and washer (if used). Most of our bolts are available in standard thread pitch, but if you need coarse, fine, or custom threading, reach out—we may be able to accommodate custom orders.

Q: What sizes are available?
A: We offer a wide range of diameters (from 1/4" to 1") and lengths (up to 12" or more) to suit everything from small decorative jobs to structural timber work. Custom sizing may be available upon request.

How It's Made:

Our square head bolts begin as high quality blanks, ensuring that each and every bolt arrives in a standard size and strength suitable for modern applications. Our blacksmiths heat these blanks in the forge until they are red-hot and pliable, then hammer, distress, or smooth each one by hand, depending on the texture that you've chosen. Once the bolts are textured and cooled, our painter applies your chosen finish by hand.
