FAQPage

What are hinges and hinge straps used for?

Hinges and hinge straps are used to hang and support doors, gates, shutters, cabinets, and furniture. They provide smooth movement while adding structural reinforcement and authentic decorative detailing.

How are your hinges different from standard hardware-store hinges?

Old West Iron hinges are made from thicker steel, feature stronger pins, and include hand-forged or hand-textured details. Unlike thin stamped imports, our hinges offer historic styling, superior durability, and old-world craftsmanship.

How do I choose the right size hinge or hinge strap?

The hinge straps length should be 1/3, 2/3 or 3/4 the width of the door and width to the scale and weight of your door or gate. Heavy doors require longer or thicker straps; lighter cabinetry uses smaller, narrower hinges. Always confirm hole spacing and fastener size before ordering.

My door is very heavy, will these hinges hold it up?

Our functioning hinge straps can be designed for heavy loads, over 200lbs. Make sure you reach out to our team via office@oldwestiron.com to make sure we know the weight of your door if its oversized.

What are the lead times and where are they made?

Most hinges and hinge straps ship within 1–10 business days, depending on size, finish, and customization. All decorative and custom-finished hardware is made or finished in the USA at our Idaho forge.
